about

Lucia is a fictional biographical retelling of James Joyce’e favored daughter of the same name. Though very important to her father, Lucia has been all but removed from history. Using Lucia Joyce’s unique story as a framework, the song explores familial and societal roles and structures that are being challenged to this day. Lucia is at once a character exploration and a celebration of a trailblazer lost to circumstance.

lyrics

She Gave up all her dreams
At her Father’s Behest
He sent her to the doctor
Said “spare no expense”
No matter how the doctor tried
He could not Put her mind To rest
It was more than a broken heart
That led to this

I remember Lucia
On the stages out in France
I remember Lucia
And the way she used to dance
Gold scales swayed to the music
Held everyone entranced
I remember Lucia
And The way she used to dance

Soon after she was born
She drew her mother’s ire
Their relationship was one of scorn
And it roiled like a tempest
They say that she was left forlorn
By the object of her desire
Now he visits her in the early morning
And he feeds her breakfast

I remember Lucia
On the stages out in France
I remember Lucia
And the way she used to dance
Gold scales swayed to the music
Held everyone entranced
I remember Lucia
And The way she used to dance

Written out of history
And locked in a madhouse vest
It’s hard to know what went wrong
It’s anybody’s guess
Could have been her brother George
And it might’ve been her Mom
Or maybe she just tried to live
When the time was wrong

I remember Lucia
On the stages out in France
I remember Lucia
And the way she used to dance
Gold scales swayed to the music
Held everyone entranced
I remember Lucia
And The way she used to dance (x2)
